Hello everyone,

I just received my TPO thyroid anti-body test results in my mail.

Does TPO level have any relation to the Graves disease?

My results say the following:
Anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies - 0.60 IU/mL

the next column say Normal Range : 0.00 - 9.00 IU/mL

Does anyone know what this implies?

Hello - TPOab (Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies) are directed against TPO, an enzyme that is involved in thyroid hormone synthesis. The presence of TPOab is considered a potential marker for autoimmune thyroid disease (Graves' or Hashimoto's thyroiditis), but is not specifically diagnostic for Graves’ disease. Some people actually have elevated TPOabs with completely normal thyroid function, although this situation is usually watched closely to see if thyroid issues do eventually develop.

The key antibody tests for Graves' are TRAb (Thyrotropin Receptor Antibody) or TSI (thyroid stimulating immunoglobulin).

I had an elevated TPOab last year. At the time my TSH was within the normal range though on the low side of normal. I was told to check my thyroid periodically. In Feb of this year I had my TSH tested again and again it was within the normal range (low side of normal). Late May I became tired and in early June I had to go to the ER with tachycardia. At the ER they ran TSH, fT3, fT4, TSI, and TPOab. All results pointed towards hyperthyroidisim. Since my TSI was elevated I was told I have Graves' D. I have been on Methimazole since then.

~ Fellow GD patient diagnosed June 2012 with a non-existent TSH, elevated fT3 and fT4, and a TSI of 4.5. On Methimazole 30mg/day for the first 8 weeks. On Methimazole 10mg/day for the next 6 weeks. On Methimazole 5mg/day for a week and a half. On Methimazole 5mg every 4 days for a month. On Methimazole 2.5mg/day starting Nov 15. In Nov labs showed a normal fT4, a normal TSH, and a TSI of 3.2. As of May 2013, still taking Methimazole 2.5mg/day and labs are all normal. TSI is unknown. Diet: Gluten and yeast free. Love to read and learn. Very interested in the immune part of GD ~
