Sorry to be a goof already… just signed on today. I forgot to take my Levoxyl last night. Is this a big deal? I think I read that it stays in your body for a long time so it shouldn't matter much.

I'm taking it at night because it seems to really mess up my digestive tract if I take the med in the morning. Experimenting a little.

You're right, levoxyl is long lasting, and it likely won't make a big difference as long as you make up the dose and put yourself back on track. It's not like a pain pill that is immediately effective and then “runs out,” it is built up in the bloodstream and then used as our body needs it. Never worry about asking a question, that's why we're here!

Ok.. thanks. But what do you mean my “make up the dose”? Do I have to take 2 tonight????

I am sure Ski will answer, but it is my thought that you should resume your schedule, and NOT make up the dose. We'll see what she says. I have been told never to make up doses if I miss one with thyroid hormone.

I'm not on replacement hormone, but you might check to see if you received a sheet of instructions from the pharmacy where you picked up the meds. Sometimes that will tell you if it's better to double up, or just skip the dose completely, if you miss one. (You can also call your pharmacist to ask).

Thanks again. I think I will just take the usual dose tonight. My pharmacist is unavailable on Sunday. But I've felt pretty good all day. Just a little cold. I guess I should have told you all that I had RAI 2 years ago. Do I need to post my labs anywhere? I've really been fighting this thing. Kind of mad at my endo for making me do this, but I understand his thinking. I was having liver effects with both the thyroid meds… Methimazole and TPU. I might have got those names wrong. Anyway, I also have MS, IBS, Scoliosis and Spondylosis and Fibro. So I'm a mess and am confused about all the meds. Trying to keep it to a minimum. Glad to have found this site.

Because we are fellow patients, not doctors (and because we don't know the individual's medical history, co-existing conditions, other medications, etc.) we feel that it can be more dangerous than productive to cross the line into giving medical advice.

As a fellow patient, I can only share with you my experience. Since my thyroidectomy in 03/2011, I have missed a few doses. No ill effects. You would think that I would get the hang of it already. I've been telling my friends that it is a good thing I was not blessed with diabetes where exact dose timing is life critical. I was also told not to double up doses for a missed dose. Hope all is well. Let us know what your doc says.

I think it depends on how far away you are from the missed dose when you realize you've missed it – the cumulative amount of replacement hormone is important to have in order to know that your blood test results are an accurate reflection of your body's reaction to the dose you're taking, but I don't believe it's wise to take two doses very close together, so perhaps there's a “line” past which you just skip it.

Thyroid hormone just isn't an instantly active thing, so it's not like you go SUPER hyper if you take more than one, and you don't go SUPER hypo if you forget one day, but if you keep forgetting here and there, you won't have as much built up in your bloodstream as you need.

If you have a really hard time remembering and you end up skipping doses often, you should let your doctor know about that when you have your labs done.
